Baseball knocks down National Third Seed, ending 3-1 on the weekend

The Lions kicked off the 2017 season on a 5 win streak before dropping their last match to Baton Rouge College on Saturday. 

Friday included knocking down the third national seed, Iowa Western in back to back games. Saturday started off with a win vs. Alvin College and the first loss of the season to Baton Rouge College. 

Game 1 vs Iowa Western 

Both teams were strong on the mound Friday, but Lions defeated Iowa Western 3-1. hurlers for Lions allowed just four hits to Iowa Western.

An early lead helped propel Lions to victory. Lions scored on a double by Tyler Boertje and a single by Luke Morton in the first inning.

Lions captured the lead in the first inning. Boertje drove in one when he doubled in the first inning.
Kordan Ward earned the win for Lions. He threw five innings, allowing one run, two hits, and striking out five. Ojani Chacon recorded the last six outs to earn the save for Lions#24 took the loss for Iowa Western. He went four and two-thirds innings, allowing two runs, five hits, and striking out three.

Coleman GrubbsBoertjeWalker DavisMorton, and Mychal Alsip each collected two hits to lead LionsLions didn't commit a single error in the field. Alsip had six chances in the field, the most on the team.

Iowa Western was sure-handed in the field and didn't commit a single error. #8 had the most chances in the field with five.

Game 2 vs Iowa Western 

Lions Grabs Lead In Seventh Inning For Victory Over Iowa Western

Lions took the lead late in the game in a 3-2 victory over Iowa Western on Friday. Iowa Western trailed 2-1 in the top of the seventh inning when there was an error, scoring one run.

The pitching was strong on both sides. hurlers for Lions struck out seven, while Iowa Western pitchers sat down seven.

After Iowa Western scored one run in the top of the sixth, Lions answered with one of their own.

Iowa Western scored when #37 singled off of Jake Norton, driving in one run.

Justin Garrett went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead Lions in hits.

Game 3 vs Alvin College 

Lions jumped out to an early lead over Alvin College and took home a 12-3 victory on Saturday.Lions scored on a triple by Cesar Gomez in the first inning, a double by Mychal Alsip in the second inning, and a stolen base in the second inning.

Alvin College took an early lead in the first inning. #28 singled on a 1-2 count in the first inning, scoring one run.Lions scored three runs in the eighth inning. Lions scored its runs on a double by Mychal Alsip.Lions took the lead for good with two runs in the first inning. In the first Cesar Gomez tripled off of #33, driving in two runs.

Garrett Hofstad earned the win for Lions. He tossed seven innings, giving up two runs, five hits, and striking out ten. #33 took the loss for Alvin College. He went two innings, giving up four runs, four hits, and striking out two.

Lions had 17 hits in the game. Jake GeorgiadesAlsipColeman GrubbsAlex AguilarWalker Davis, and Tyler Boertje each collected multiple hits for LionsGrubbsAlsip, and Georgiades each managed three hits to lead Lions.

Game 4 vs Baton Rouge College 

Even though Lions and Baton Rouge College both had their opportunities, it was Baton Rouge College that eventually prevailed 12-5 on Saturday. The game was tied at five with Baton Rouge College batting in the bottom of the sixth when #2 doubled off of Joseph Goetze, driving in one run.

Baton Rouge College took an early lead in the first inning. #15 drove in one when he doubled in the first inning.Lions scored three runs in the fourth inning. Lions's big inning was driven by a single by Tyler Boertje and a single by Alex Aguilar.In the bottom of the fifth inning, Baton Rouge College tied things up at five. #38's sac fly scored one run for Baton Rouge College.Baton Rouge College scored four runs in the eighth inning. Baton Rouge College's big inning was driven by a home run by #15 and a double by #8.Baton Rouge College took the lead for good with two runs in the sixth inning. In the sixth #40 singled off of Parker Fanning, driving in one run.

Lions had nine hits in the game. Walker Davis and Boertje each collected multiple hits for Lions.Boertje and Davis each collected two hits to lead Lions.

Baton Rouge College collected 14 hits. #40#20#38#8, and #15 each collected multiple hits for Baton Rouge College.
